Organize Your Wardrobe
With a Closet System
Installing a closet system is a relatively
easy job if you don't need to locate wall studs. Closet systems like the ones made by
Closet Maid and Lee/Rowan use fin-back clips.
These work much like plastic wall anchors,
except their wings spread farther. And when properly installed, a heavy-duty unit can
support 50 to 75 pounds per linear foot.
To install a shelf, use a level to mark a
line the length of the shelf at the height you want. Then drill quarter-inch diameter
holes along the line, every 9 to 11 inches. Insert the fin-back clips into each hole. Then
drive the screws into the clips, making sure to hold the clip so that it doesnt
turn.
For shelves that are being installed in a
corner or run from wall to wall, you'll need to install end-mounting brackets on the side
walls as well. With the shelf placed in the end bracket, mark the spot to mount the
bracket on the wall.
But before you drill, check the shelf with
a level to make sure it's straight. And be sure you have someone help you raise the shelf
above the place where the anchors will go. Otherwise, when you install the end brackets,
you won't be able to move the shelf over them. When this is done, you're ready to drill
quarter-inch holes for the anchors and screws.
Make your full-width shelf one inch
shorter than the distance between each wall. This will give you enough clearance so you
don't nick the walls during installation. Cut the shelf with a hand saw. Then cover the
ends with plastic end caps.
Attach a support brace to the shelf at
least every 36 inches. Then secure it with a plastic wall anchor and screw.
Later, if you decide you want to relocate
a shelf, just remove the screw and clip from the wall. Both pieces are reusable.
